Table Mountain - the symbol of Cape Town, South Africa

Table Mountain is a majestic flat-topped mountain that became the symbol of Cape Town and South Africa. Table Mountain is also called a "Sleeping Giant" because it literally looks like a giant that is lying on his back and looking at the sky. As the legend goes, this giant was the Guardian of the South who wished to protect the southern corner of the earth even after his death. The Earth Goddess, Djobela, fulfilled the giant's dying wish by turning him into the mountain that became Table Mountain.

This breathtaking sleeping giant is surrounded by the glorious city of Cape Town and the blue Atlantic Ocean. The view from the top of the mountain is just astonishing! Every year hundreds and thousands of tourists flock to Cape Town to marvel at the beauty of its landmark and conquer Table Mountain either by hiking or by cable car.

Hiking to the Top of Table Mountain


There are plenty of hiking trails to the summit of the mountain. Kasteelpoort hiking trail is very popular among tourists because this scenic hike leads to the most famous photo location on the mountain - the "Diving Board " rock. On this flat granite rock which protrudes out of the mountainside, you can pose for some fantastic photos and admire awe-inspiring views of the Atlantic Ocean and Camps Bay.


Cable Car Ride


Even if you are not a hiker or a mountain-climber, you still can reach the top of the mountain and be rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view over the city, the ocean, and the surrounding peaks. One cable car can take 65 passengers from the lower station to the summit in just 5 minutes. The ride is gentle and beautiful. Many tourists say that it is the best way to experience the beautiful landscapes because the floor of the car gently rotates 360 degrees, giving all visitors a panoramic view.




What is at the top of Table Mountain?


The plateau on Table Mountain is around 3 kilometers from side to side. Here you can walk around to the various viewpoints and admire the breathtaking scenery from different angles. Also, you can grab a bite at the Table Mountain Cafe or enjoy a cup of freshly brewed coffee at the WiFi Lounge.
