The floating mountains in the Avatar movie really exist on earth, or to be more precise, in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in China's Hunan Province. The most unique features of the Zhangjiajie national park are the giant sandstone pillars that are seen throughout the park. One of these impressive pillar-like formations, the "South Sky Pillar", became the basis for the most famous floating mountain of Pandora, and it was officially renamed "Avatar Hallelujah Mountain". There is truly no other place like Zhangjiajie, which is home to more than 3000 unique mountain pillars that are covered by lush foliage. Avatar Mountains are located in Yuanjiajie Scenic Area in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in Wulingyuan District, Zhangjiajie city, Hunan province in South China.
How to get to Zhangjiajie city
There is only one airport in Zhangjiajie: Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport. The fastest way to get to Zhangjiajie is to fly there from some major cities of China: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xi'an, etc. Also, you can take a train or bus to Zhangjiajie city from various Chinese cities but you may have to change trains/buses. Trains/buses are pretty cheap but obviously a bit slow.
How to get to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
The park is about 35km away from Zhangjiajie city. You can take a tourist bus from Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station in downtown to Wulingyuan Bus Terminal, that takes about 50 minutes. Also, you can take a taxi from the airport or train station.
When to visit Avatar Mountains and where to stay
April, May, September, and October are the best months to visit the mountains.
The best place to stay is Wulingyuan town because it is the nearest to the main park entrance. The town offers a lot of different hotels from luxury to budget hotels.
