Best Attractions in Tianmen Mountain

1. The world's longest cableway

The best way to reach the top of the mountain is to take the world's longest cable car ride. Visitors admire the breathtaking natural scenery from the cable car for about 30 minutes (7.5 kilometers) until they reach the mountaintop with a large temple, Tianmen Gate, and a scenic sky garden. One cable car can hold 8 people and the cableway can carry up to 1000 passengers per hour. The cable car station is located in downtown Zhangjiajie, close to the bus and train stations.

2. Tongtian Avenue: 99 bends to the Heaven's Gate

The cableway offers a fantastic view over Tongtian Avenue - 11 kilometers road that makes 99 sharp turns. The road leads to the top of the mountain and takes visitors to the Tianmen Cave aka the Heaven's Gate. So it's no wonder why this road is also called "Heaven Linking Avenue" and "Big Gate Road". Tourists can take a sightseeing shuttle bus from the middle station of the cable car to go uphill through the bending road to "Heaven". The second option is to ride a cable car to the top of the mountain and then take a shuttle bus to go downhill through"Heaven Linking Avenue". Enjoy the scary, yet exciting and beautiful ride to the "Heaven"! For those of you who prone to motion sickness, the bus ride to the "Heaven" is not recommended (a narrow road with 99 sharp turns is not a joke!)

3. Tianmen Cave - Take a Stairway to Heaven's Gate

Tianmen Cave is a unique door-alike hole with the highest elevation in the world (1300 meters above sea level). Unbelievably large hole (30 meters wide) in the mountain looks like the portal to heaven, that can be reached if visitors climb 999 steps up to the cave on the "Stairway to Heaven". Do you want to "knock on Heaven's Door? Be prepared for the tiresome journey up the stairs that takes around 30 minutes.

4. Glass skywalk

The cliff-hanging walkway and the glass skywalk are the other reasons to visit Tianmen Mountain. The mind-blowing walkway was embedded in the vertical mountain cliff and hanged along the edges of the Tianmen mountaintop. The walkway's length is about 1.6 kilometers, its height is 1430 meters. This walkway is mostly made of concrete but there are also three thrilling skywalks with completely transparent glass floors. The third and the newest skywalk is "Coiled Dragon Cliff Glass Walkway". If you dare to look down, you can see the breathtaking mountainous landscapes from a bird's eye view through the crystal clear glass floor.

5. Magnificent Tianmen Mountain Temple

On the summit of Tianmen Mountain visitors can experience genuine peace and tranquility of a sacred place of Buddhism - Tianmen Mountain Temple. This elegant and magnificent building in the Qing Dynasty style is surrounded by ancient trees and occupies an area of more than 20,000 square meters. Listen to the sound of silence while gazing at the sea of clouds and the distant mountains. Here you may find inner peace and happiness within yourself. You can reach the Tianmen Temple by open-air chairlift or on foot.
