Tianzi Mountain - The King of All Mountains

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is a unique national forest with more than 3000 huge pillar rock formations. The park is so huge that it is divided into several tourist areas. After the Yuanjiajie scenic area (home to Hallelujah Mountain), Tianzi Mountain Natural Reserve is the second most popular area of the park. After visiting the Yuanjiajie part of the park, many tourists prefer to go to explore Tianzi Mountain that is just 1 hour 10 minutes drive away. Tianzi Mountain Natural Reserve has the highest peaks in Wulingyuan Scenic Area and offers the most spectacular and broad view over the alien landscape of the park.

Here are the main highlights at Tianzi Mountain Natural Reserve.

Xihai Stone Forest (西海峰林)

According to many travelers, Xihai Stone Forest is the most impressive and photogenic spot of the entire Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. The Xihai Stone Forest is situated at Tianzi Mountain Natural Reserve and it is considered to be the most popular attraction in this area. The stone pillars here have a wide variety of shapes. From the right angle, they look like stone stairs of enormous size that lead up to the sky. The best place to observe the Stone Forest is Dianjiang Terrace (a small viewing platform).


Tianzi Mountain Cable Car

The view from the cable is so incredible that the cable car became the highlight for many visitors. It takes visitors to the top of the mountain only in 10 minutes, Visitors enjoy the awe-inspiring scenery of charming peaks while floating through the clouds in the cable car. It helps visitors to save a lot of energy and discover the area from a bird's eye view.

Shentang Gulf (神堂湾)

Shentang Gulf is a mysterious bottomless gorge covered by a steadily moving veil of mist and fog. According to legend, King Xianzi died after falling into a gulf. The only way down to the bottom - a natural 9-step staircase - is so dangerous and terrifying that this place has mostly remained untouched by people. There is a deep and dark pool at the bottom of the gorge which depth is still unknown. Some people say that on rainy and windy days the sound of galloping horses and shouting people can be heard from the bottom of the gorge.


Imperial Writing Brush Peaks (御笔峰)

From the summit of Tianzi mountain, you can see one of the best-known sandstone formations in the park - Imperial Writing Brush Peaks. These stone pillars look like huge Chinese traditional writing brush sticking up into the sky and wrapped in a mysterious mist. According to legend, this brush belonged to King Xiang and was left there by him in ancient times.


Sky Fields Garden (空中田园)

Sky Fields Garden is a small area of rice fields farmed by local people. What is so unusual about rice fields? Well, these rice fields are located on the top of a huge stone pillar at a height of 1000 meters above sea level. Just imagine paddy fields that look like floating in the air surrounded by clouds and stone pillar forest. Mind-blowing isn't it?

The mountaintop rice field can be seen from Yuanjiajie. If you want to set foot in it you need to hire a local van for an additional fee.


Tianzi Pavilion (天子阁)

Tianzi Pavilion is the best viewing deck in Tianzi Mountain scenic area. This pavilion, built in traditional Chinese style, has 6 storeys and multiple roofs. The pavilion offers a breathtaking view over all the peaks and mountains of Tianzi Mountain Natural Reserve.
